US Census Records

British Genealogists and Family Historians in the UK often have to consult the US Census Records in completing British Family Trees as many ancestors and distant relatives may have emigrated to the United States of America. US Censuses have been taken every 10 years since 1790. In that very first Census of 1790 a majority of the 3.9 million citizens had emigrated from Britain. In the 1980 United States Census 49 million Americans claimed English Ancestry.

We are using this section of our website to provide direct links to each US Census from 1790 to 1940.  Under US law census details can be released after 72 years so the next one to be released will be the 1950 Census in 2022. We’ve also included the population of the United States from each census and the President at the time the census was taken. You may also like to view our US Passenger Lists section which includes information on Passenger Lists to USA from UK.
