Derbyshire Family History Society

This society was set up over 25 years ago to assist local researchers tracing family history. Their library in Derby is open 3 days a week, open to members and non-members – although non-members will be expected to make a donation.

All members get a range of options for a modest fee, including: A Quarterly Journal, a chance to compete in national projects within the national “Federation of Family History Societies”, and monthly meetings across the county – currently these are held in Derby, Glossop and High Peak, and South Normanton.

There are a range of facilities available through their website including searches of births, deaths and marriages records for Derbyshire. Non-members are also able to search through some Derbyshire baptism, burials and cemetery records for free.

Derbyshire Record Office

This office combines both archives and services for local studies. Original documents held at the site include Derbyshire public bodies and Diocesan and Derbyshire parish records including registers of baptisms, marriages and burials from 16th Century onwards for over 400 Anglican parishes in the county. Records also include archives from industries and businesses in the county.

Derbyshire Newspaper Archives

Local newspaper archives can serve many invaluable purposes for family historians. They can provide (or confirm) essential dates such as a birth, marriage or death announcement. They can also supply the location of a researched ancestor. In addition, they can ‘flesh out’ the history of an individual via other announcements or reports, whether they be achievements or misdemeanors. The British Newspaper Archive has been digitising UK newspaper archives since 2011. Their archives can be accessed upon payment of a subscription (various options are available). Here is the link to the page dedicated to Derbyshire Newspaper Archives. You will see that they detail both the local newspapers currently digitised, together with relevant years.
