Cumbria Family History

The Cumbria Family History page has been created to assist Family History Researchers and Genealogists tracing relatives and lost ancestors in the large County of Cumbria, the most western county on the Scottish border. We have a range of resources on this page of our website and we hope you will find these Cumbrian Family History resources helpful in your research.

Cumbria Family History Society

This society assists Family History Research in Cumbria, this society also includes part of North Yorkshire and North Lancashire. The society publishes a Quarterly Newsletter with membership and the society also holds Quarterly meetings in London for members in the south east. The publishing programme covers topics including the 1851 Census involving the region. Full details of this Census and other Cumbria family history records can also be found on their website. Memorial Inscriptions, Carlisle Marriage Bonds, Probate and Burial Indexes are also included in the programme.

Cumbria Archive Service

This service has Archive Centres in Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal and Whitehaven. The service cares for parish records, church records, wills, electoral registers and many more. The archives for a plethora of families, businesses and local authorities (and more) help build a record of all aspects of life in the region. The service also provides an educational service and information and advice on the preservation and conservation of these records. There is a useful pdf document available from Cumbria Archives that details Cumbrian Church of England parish registers with some of the records going back to 1538. This document lists the individual parishes, the baptism, marriages, burials and banns and gives the dates covered. It also gives information on where the pre 1858 probate records for Cumbria are kept and dates and whereabouts of Cumbrian bishops transcripts and the pre 1974 county the parish belonged to. The pdf is located here: Cumbrian Church of England parish registers
