Becoming a professional Genealogist is a fulfilling career for anyone who enjoys Family History research. There are a number of courses in Genealogy, Genealogical Studies and other Family History Courses, ranging from part time certificates to a couple of postgraduate degree courses. We have listed some of the courses on offer here in the UK and have shown this information below. This list will not include all courses available, and we cannot evaluate which courses are best and which offer the best value for money and use of your time – that is up to you to investigate.

Free Online FutureLearn Course (with optional upgrade)

FutureLearn is owned by the Open University and offer a wide range of free online courses.  They have partnered with leading universities across the UK to offer this useful resource to British citizens.  University of Strathclyde are running a free 6 week (4 hours a week) online course on genealogy aimed at beginner to intermediate level.  This may be a great way to start studying genealogy and family history.  Whilst it is free there is an upgrade available to gain full access to the course and a certificate of participation at the end.  There is a very useful youtube video of 38 minutes long which is part of this course and features livestream discussion and review of the course.
