Scottish Highland Family History

Scottish Highland Family History Resources

For those family historians who are tracing ancestors who lived in the Scottish Highland region in Northern Scotland, it is likely that the website ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk(£) is the first website you visit. This site contains an exhaustive digitised catalogue of family history resources, including church births, marriages and deaths records and Scottish census returns.

Family History Societies and Family History Archives

Family history societies can be a great source of information and encouragement. They often run events and these can give you an opportunity to meet new people and share stories and experiences.

The Highland Family History Society is based in Inverness. Founded in 1981, it now has over 650 members. It produces a number of publications, including a quarterly journal. Members of this society are encouraged to share their research with other members.

The Highland Archive Service has Archive Service Centres at:

Highland Newspaper Archives

Local Newspaper Archives and Historical Newspaper records provide very helpful information for Family Historians when undertaking research. Information can often be found that is not available in Parish Records, or Censuses and often provides greater insight into the lives of our ancestors. The British Newspaper Archive(£) is a great source of digitised Highland Newspaper Archives.
